and free appointment, but it was a philosophy that was well worth knowing and hearing. We got along very well indeed. I stayed a long time. Before I left he said to me, “Say would you like to see the secret chamber of Tammany Hell?”

I said, “Why yes, I'd love to, but isn't that against the rules?”

“Sure it's against the rules, but I'm the boss.”

It was late in the afternoon. He said, “Most of the folks have gone and nobody will know about this. I'll get my key and we'll go right up.”

I forget whether we took an elevator or took the stairs. I think we walked. I think his office was on the second floor over on the northwest corner - a very impressive office. We walked up the last flight on a very impressive ornamental stairway - black marble floor with a beautiful curved stairway with wrought iron railings. He said, “This came right out of the old Tammany Hall. We brought this stairway with us. The whole interior of this secret room where the sachems meet and where they perform all the mystical rites of the society we took right out of the old Tammany Hall. All we've done is to repair it, repair the paneling, put it in order. Some of the chairs had to be copied and duplicated because they were broken down. The gold eagles
