“Well, I took up golf and so did my partners. It made me feel like such a fool to go into the factory with my golf clothes on on Saturday morning that I said, ‘Hell, let them all off.’” In those days men wore funny baggy pants - plus fours - that came down to their ankles when they played golf. Today I guess they play golf in what they've got on, but then you had to have special clothes. I don't know how they ever let that go, because that would have been good for the clothing business - special clothes for every sport.
We also recommended shortening the daily hours. The legal pattern for women was eight hours and for men there was no limitation, but by habit it had come to be eight or nine hours. We urged shortening it to seven, to six, to whatever seemed practical. A six hour day in manufacturing was practical and economical. They could get the work done if they planned it on a six hour day and a five day week - that was thirty hours. Among those manufacturers who were willing to undertake, as a civic and public duty, a project of stabilizing their employment there was a good deal of moving to the five day week. That was the easiest thing to figure out. You didn't have to have a lot of bookkeepers to figure that out on your costs. That was done easily and there was a great deal of moving to the shorter hours.
