Communists. That was here reasoning in the matter if she had any reasoning. Her reason was so simple, so based on ignorance and stupidity that I just thought it must be her own private invention.
I tried to be as nice to her as I could, but I recommended to Smith, while he was Governor, that he tell Hamilton to fire her. I finally said to Roosevelt, “I'll just have to get rid of McPike. I can't have her around. She's too troublesome, makes too much difficulty. She's an utterly useless factotum. She ought not to be there. She's now piled up years of service so that she's got an adequate retirement pension coming to her. She's passed the period of her productivity so that nobody else would have employed her as long as we have.”
He said, “All right, go ahead.”
It was then that she began to be against me and to say nasty things, write anonymous letters to me, cause anonymous letters to be written. I had some of them traced and they were traced right to her. There wasn't any question about it.
