he reads it in the paper.” So I called him up. I said, “I've got something to tell you. I have done something that you may think is very wrong. I'd like to tell you about it. Are you feeling amiable?”
He said, “Yes, I feel amiable.”
I said, “Did you read the Times this morning?”
“Yes,” he said, “did you see what the President said about unemployment? Is that true?”
I said, “No, it isn't true and that's what I'm calling you up about, Governor. It's completely untrue. Unemployment is worse, not better. He gave out information that was based on ignorant deceit. He ought to have known better.”
“I'm interested. I'd hoped that things were better, but you hadn't told me it was.”
I said, “Here's the story I've got to tell you. I got very angry. I've been working on it all day. I discovered the exact particulars in which he was wrong. I have just given out a statement to the press. I forgot to call you up first and ask you if I might. I've given out a statement to the press in which I said that the President of the United States has deceived the people of the United States, that the depression was getting worse and not better.”
He said, “The hell you have!”
I said, “That's what I've done. It's in the city rooms
