they were practical, could be done and wouldn't upset the economy.

Before the inauguration I went to see Governor Lehman in his New York apartment. On account of the banking crisis, as Governor, he was in New York a great deal, because it was very important for him to be close to the New York banking situation, which, of course, emanates from the city and not from upstate. He was very disturbed about that. I'm pretty sure that I went to see him at his New York apartment and told him that the President had offered me the post of Secretary of Labor.

Their apartment and their house was furnished in great, heavy, dark furniture, bought when they were first married, which was the fashion of the period. It was quite a little on the ornate side, with heavy damask curtains and draperies. I seem to remember that they were red with a kind of gold pattern on it - not gold thread, but a gold pattern. It was not a plain damask, but a damask that had more than one color. It isn't the taste that I admire, but it's comfortable and handsome in its own way, It's
