to call up the Department and asked for it. Dan Roper knew the ropes. He was a very rich man and lived in Washington for many years. He had a handsome limousine of his own and I think was using that that day. He had an experienced driver who knew his way around, so he was all taken care of.
The rest of us were all greenhorns and it was catch as catch can. They hadn't made any provision or plan for us. That was just rude.
So we got out of the car and walked. The time was so late that we felt we had to run. Henry, Ilo, Susanna and I just ran. We became fast friends at that point. That was our first meeting. They were so nice to us and we were so nice to them. We were all in the same jam together and we've never ceased to be friends. It cemented our friendship. I was concerned about Susanna and Ilo said, “Why I've got tickets for that same section. Susanna can come with me. You and Henry go and get yourself onto the platform any way you can. I'll take Susanna and we'll get our seats in the distinguished visitors' section, which is right in front of the stand,”
We all rushed. We walked just as fast as we could. We elbowed out way. We pushed. Henry was very bold, saying, “Will you be good enough to let us pass? Kindly make way.
