Part:         Session:         Page of 564

We got out on the platform. Everybody else practically was there, including all the outgoing Hoover administration, all the assistant secretaries and their wives, all the assistants to the secretary and their wives, all the supreme Court, all the diplomatic corps in diplomatic dress, with white plumes in their hats and gold embroidered jackets. I don't remember seeing Doak. I think he was there because everybody else was.

We couldn't find a place to sit down. We had a hard time getting a place to sit down. Finally we found some seats over on the side. That was all right. We were not sworn in yet. We were not officers of the government and our predecessors were.

The proceedings began. Everything went as scheduled. The old Dutch Bible came out. Roosevelt looked very well, very handsome, very slender, awfully well set-up. His clothes looked well. They didn't look too much as though they'd come from Hart, Schaffer & Marx. They fitted him nicely the way a good tailor makes your clothes to fit. Yet they weren't baggy either. They were neat and sharp. He had a silk hat on his head, but he took it off for the inauguration ceremony. He looked very well. Mrs. Roosevelt looked very well. They boys looked very well. Jim stood up with him. He always had to have some body to stand up with him to lean on.
