the energies of the people, who if held in the bond of fear would have been unable to move, and to give direction and purpose to our energies. If our banks had failed, all right, we could all turn to, help each other, and make do with that last crust of bread by handing it around.
I'm sure he had a kind of religious experience over what he did that night and that morning. He suddenly felt the quality of spiritual needs of all the people, which was looking to him to be the actor placed on the stake by Divine providence, to give meaning and purpose to their worrying and suffering, and to give direction to their efforts to get out.
It was not a speech of program, which said “do this, take this and you'll be cured.” It was really a speech that said, “Everybody must do his best where he is. We needn't be afraid. People who know better than we do built this country. We will rebuild it. Things are bad, but they aren't as bad as they apear to be if we're afraid. We will recover.” It was that essence in it which really made it a great speech because it gave great courage. People cried. Tears streamed down the faces of strong men in the audience as they listened to it.
It was a revival of faith. He said,” Come on now, do you believe?” They said, “Yes, we do.” It made them cry
