Wallaces were still with us. The Ickeses came along in a limousine, which I discovered later they had rented for the day, because I asked them where they got it. I, having been introduced to Harold a couple of weeks before in Roosevelt's house, recognized him and he recognized me. They at once opened the door and said, “Come with us. You're in an awful jam.” Their car was a private car, but it was still moving very slowly through the crowd which was milling around. The chauffeur was honking to make way. Still the Ickeses seemed to be better equipped with knowledge than I was. Anyhow, we piled into their car, very glad to have a resting place, and the chauffeur knew where to go.

At this moment, I don't remember where it was we were going, but we were going to luncheon somewhere. We may have been going to the White House, I'm not sure. Anyway, we were going somewhere to a luncheon and we were late. I was disturbed about it. If it wasn't at the White House, I haven't the remotest idea where the Luncheon was held. I just don't recall. This luncheon may even have been something given by the Democratic National committee at the Mayflower Hotel. For all I know that was it and it would have been a perfectly plausible thing. The only thing that's interesting about the luncheon is that the streets were so crowded, there were so many
