I said, “My card read ‘east gate.’” She laughed and said, “ You shouldn't have gone there.

Don't you know Cabinet officers are supposed to come in the front door of the White House?”

I said, “No, I didn't know. Nobody told me. Anyhow, I'm not a Cabinet officer yet.”

I remember Missy laughing. She said, “I don't know any more either, except what I've learned in the last two days, but most of the other people are here. We've been wondering where in the world you were. Now come with me”

She took me out of the line. Somebody else joined her and took Susanna out of the line. She summoned a military aide and a naval aide who armed me and armed Susanna around the line right up into the room where the president was receiving. Of course, Susanna, who was still a little girl, had never been armed anywhere in her life. When a gentleman offered her his arm, it was almost more than she could bear. Of course, in dancing school you get a little of that, but the little boys in dancing school don't do it as impressively as military aides do. It was an occasion she never forgot.

I remember that occasion, because I realize now that, although I was a grown person, I was not prepared for the Washington code. I doubt if anybody is prepared for the
