Part:         Session:         Page of 564

Of course, Tom Cullen was a member of Congress and I know he was there that day. He was a Tammany Hall man. I knew him when he went to the Legislature in New York, and then he came down to Washington as a Congressman. I know that he was there that day. Tom Cullen was the head of an important committee, or about to be the head or an important committee, in the congress from seniority. That was why he got invited to this reception I presume.

Al Smith was there and was in the inaugural parade. Of course Herbert Lehman was there, but he was Governor of the state of New York and all the Governors come if they possibly can, and certainly all Democratic Governors came. Herbert Lehman went right back at the close of Inauguration Day because the banking crisis in New York was some thing. That was a major responsibility for him. I think he came down later in the week to go to this Governors' conference that the president had called. That followed very closely on inauguration because of the fact that so many Governors were already in or nearby Washington and it wouldn't mean a new long journey for them. Practically all the Democratic Governors were there, and some others, because all Governors of all states were invited to the inauguration.

Sometime in that afternoon or what day there must have been an inauguration parade. I recall the inauguration
