began he began muttering about how there were communists around. Before there had been communists there had been Fascists right in our midsts able to push us around. Whittaker Chambers says that he want to Berle about Alger Hiss, but Berle never mentioned Hiss to me. Whittaker Chambers in his book says that he went and told Berle. What he says he told Berle I don't remember. I read Whittaker Chambers' book after I got back from Europe last year (1952). Strange that I don't remember it. It made me sort of ill. When I say “ill,” I mean nauseated. There was so much in it that is was very hard to read.
