seen tanks of the kind that were being made in 1940. A lot of weapons were shown, such as anti-aircraft stuff and so on.

It's curious, because you'd suppose that I'd remember every detail of that first inauguration, but I don't I don't remember about the parade and about the lunch. I remember vaguely about the parade. I think that the Governors did ride. I think there where units of the state military outfits. I do really believe that there was a buffet luncheon being served somewhere. It's all mixed up in my mind between the parade, the luncheon and various other things. I don't remember what the reviewing stand looked like. I don't remember any of that.

I remember what the stand at the Capitol, where Roosevelt took the oath of office, looked like. I remember every detail. I could even tell you how Sir Ronald Lindsay was dressed. He was the British Ambassador. I could tell you how different his clothes were from other ambassadors' clothes. He wore the official uniform of the Archers of St. Andrew, which, as he explained to me afterwards, is a wonderful diplomatic uniform for cold weather, because it consists of a nice warm black cassock-like; rather long, down to the boot tops, at least, cloth. It's got a great big plaid shawl draped over the shoulders of whatever his
