I said, “Surely there'll be ushers.”

“Well, perhaps you'll find somebody. Anyhow, find anyone who looks as if he was the reception committee and has a white carnation in his buttonhole. Grab him, cling to his arm, and tell him to bring you to our box. Then you'll be safe.”

I said, “Safe from what?”

“From being trampled on,” is what she answered. “Don't let that pretty Susanna go rumbling around the hall. She'll be ruined. She'll be trampled on.” That was Lily's funny way of putting it.

Anyway, we arrived at the Uline Arena, which I only knew through the name on the ticket. I said, “My Lord, it looks like a livery stable,” as we got out of the cab. We were still running around in taxicabs. There was no private conveyance provided.

We went in. You could hear this blast of music. It was full of draughts. The little entrance lobby was just a gale of wind whirling around. It was terrible. I suppose it was a cold night and it was really very, very bad. The draughts were terrific and the wind was blowing in there. I remember somebody saying, “Check your cloaks over here.” I had had long experience at official things in New York and
