forty-odd, but she was a kind of ageless person who was very handsome, very good-looking, very blonde, with good features, and magnificently dressed. She had on one of the most elaborate and beautiful evening dresses I ever saw in my life. The major coloration that I hold in memory was pink, but that wasn't all there was to it. It wasn't a plain pink dress. It was a beautifully made, beautifully cut, beautifully bespangled outfit that was really very stunning, and extremely becoming to her. I noticed her standing there all alone. She saw me and said, “Oh, I'm so happy to see you my dear.” She rushed up, grabbed me, kissed me warmly on both cheeks. She said, “Is this your little daughter?”

I said it was and said, “This is my cousin, Mr. Johnston.” I hadn't the remotest idea who this woman was - not the remotest. Actually it was not for a couple of years that I discovered who she was. I was always meeting her, but always in large public places. I would forget her in between times. I'd meet her in large public gatherings of Democrats, and so forth. She was always stunningly dressed, very super-dressed. Then I would remember that I had met her at the door of the Uline Arena on the night of the inaugural ball, but I didn't know what her name was then and I never did learn, because in between times I always forgot to inquire.
