Part:         Session:         Page of 564

I remember saying, when she was appointed, to Mrs. India Edwards, “What about Miss Frieda Hennock and how come I never knew about her in New York?”

“I don't know that you would,” Said she. “She's a very faithful contributor to the Democratic campaign funds always. She's always made large contributions.”

I said, “I've seen her around always at Democratic big parties - the party that they would have at the Commodore or the Biltmore on election night, whether it was a state or a presidential election. That was where I saw her.”

I saw her for the first time at the inaugural ball and I never forgot her. She was very nice. I thought she was a part of the inaugural ball reception committee. I took that for granted. She seemed to be awfully aware of what was going on, how things were done, and so forth.

I said to her that night that I was going right to Mrs. Polk's box because I thought Susanna would be well off there. Did she know how I could recognize an usher? She said, “I'll get you one.” She walked in, waved her hand, and some young man with a white carnation in his buttonhole rushed up. She introduced me to him and him to me. He was, of course, very glad to escort me to Mrs. Polk's box.
