don't think the whole diplomatic corps was there, but there were a considerable element. They were mostly the younger element of the diplomatic corps - the assistant secretaries and so forth were there. There were also a lot of military there. Admiral Cary Grayson and Mrs. Grayson were there. I remember that. He was still alive then. I remember their being there. Of course, he had been a very close friend of the Polks.

I can probably stretch my memory and remember others who were there, but it was really an unimportant event so far as my life and functioning were concerned. And, as I said I got no conception of the structure of government out of it, how this darn place operated, who did what, and how you did it. It was just an exhausting period.

We went home to the Willard Hotel after that and I don't remember much other detail about that day. The next day was Sunday. I'm sure I got up and went to church, because I always do, but I don't remember where. All through the day on Sunday a lot of invitations began to pile into the Willard Hotel. There were invitations to tea, invitations to one thing and another on Sunday, with a concert here, and an art exhibit there. All of these are regularly done to entertain the visitors. I was so filled up by a sense that I ought to see these New York people who had come down with
