its peak long ago. It was the first industry that was affected by the industrial revolution with the introduction of machinery. It has reached its peak long ahead of the others and it never can hope to have the expansion, therefore the profits, therefore the wages, therefore the easy working conditions that other industries have. The people in the trade union of the cotton textile industry must contribute to this idea that the cotton textile industry in relation to the other industries of the country is of less importance and that the rewards will not be so great, either in profits or in wages, as they are in other industries.”
“Well,” I said, “just don't try to sell that to people who work in the cotton textile industry. To be sure they do get lower wages, they do work longer hours. I agree with you. The working conditions aren't as good, and certainly for some of the reasons that you cite, but they always think they can be as good. They don't stay hopelessly in the cotton textile business at Spartanburg, South Carolina, because they have accepted the idea that cotton textiles is a naturally lower grade industry than electrical apparatus manufacturing, which is certainly in an expanding period.”
