Now nothing else happened immediately. The General continued to give these lectures for a couple of months. He gave similar lectures to the Employers' Advisory Board, much to their consternation and confusion. They were somewhat startled at times to discover the economic role they were supposed to play. Some of them took it better than others did. They were somewhat startled to find that the labor unions could be organized into a stronger group. That hadn't been what they had been thinking about. Johnson thought that the vertical union would be stronger and would give the union a greater place. The employers were somewhat disturbed - confused at least - by the idea that the trade union had anything to contribute to the economic thinking about the industry. They hadn't met with that before, nor had any- body else for that matter. It was sort of a startling idea to the employers, as it was to the trade unionists. I never had met a trade unionist up until that time, and have not many since, who even wanted to contribute to the economic or technical development of the industry. They want to get their good wages and good working industries. As one man once said to me, “What does the boss get his big salary for? He should be the one to worry about the economy of this industry.” I must say there's a good deal of sense in that. He's paid to think out how you get the best out
