over quickly. Mr. Green is here and he will sign the code. He's, after all, the President of the American Federation of Labor.”

Mr. Taylor said to me, “Miss Perkins, we cannot do this. We cannot do this.”

I said, “Why, what's the trouble?”

“We cannot sit down and talk to William Green. We cannot even discuss this code with him.”

“Why,” I said, “Mr. Taylor, that's ridiculous. He's not going to say anything. He has no suggestions to make. I know. I've explained the code to him as well as it can be explained. He doesn't thoroughly understand it. He's going along.”

Fortunately the room was long enough so that Green couldn't hear our conversation, but he knew what was going on. I appealed to the lawyer. I said, “Surely you must advise these people that they shouldn't do this.”

Then he said, “Miss Perkins, I don't think you understand how serious this is.” Mr. Grace said, “This is very serious. If we sit down with Mr. Green, if we sign a code that he signs, it will be assumed that we are dealing with organized labor. As you know, we have an almost sacred policy that we will never recognize or deal with organized labor.”
