word to the Burgess of McKeesport that I would call on him. I did. We had a pleasant five minute call and then went on. I also sent word to the Burgess of Homestead - they don't have mayors, but burgesses - that I wished to call upon him. I think I had telephoned it to him. The Burgess, John Cavanaugh, had said there was a great interest in my coming. He knew that I had been invited by the steel company to come. He said that a lot of people in Homestead would like to meet me.
I said, “That will be very nice indeed. I'll be glad to.”
He said, “If you're willing, I'd like to invite them to come in. There's room back of my office where the Board of Burgesses meets and I thought we could meet them in there. I'll introduce you. You might make a few remarks. They'll be the best people in our town. We'll be glad to have you.”
I said, “That'll be very nice. I'll be happy to do that.”
So we went over the Homestead thinking of nothing but peace and good will. Father Haas had already arranged with the local priest in McKeesport and the local priest in Homestead that I should come to their parish halls in the evening. They would have a group of their parishioners there. One had a Bohemian and the other a Polish congregation. Father Haas had been arranging that during the day.
