They all stood silently and looked at me again, thinking, “What is she going to do? Is she going to let this Burgess get the best of her?”
Just by luck my eye caught the sight of the American flag flying on a street that was facing the square, but at right angles to the street we were then on. Although it was almost six o'clock, I realized that that was the post office - a federal building. The Burgess had no control over that. I just saw that in a flash. It was one of those lucky breaks. I said to these men, “Very well, there is the American flag. There is a federal building. I have the right to receive you in that federal building. We will go there. All of you come.”
I went, Father Haas snickering as he walked along beside me. He said, “That was a good break.”
I said, “Did you see the flag, Father Haas?”
He said, “No, I didn't see the flag, I'm free to say. I was saying prayers for you, but I didn't see the flag.”
It was far enough away so that it was really almost by the grace of God that my eye caught it. It was at right angles to us, not straight in front of us. Anyhow, we went over there. The office closed at six o'clock and they were just getting ready to go. It wasn't quite six, but they were ready to leave. I explained to the postmaster and all hands what the trouble was.
