At any rate, it was somewhat of a surprise to me to realize that they couldn't come into a public building. Miss Read invited me to come out to have tea at Spelman College and meet a few of her friends. It didn't occur to me that there could be the slightest question about the propriety or regularity of doing that. I never even consulted anybody. It didn't cross my mind sufficiently to recognize that anybody could even possibly have anything to say about it, or that anybody could even possibly doubt the wisdom of doing it. I looked at my schedule, found that I could, and said that surely I would. She said that somebody would come to the hotel for me. A car came for me, criven by one of the teachers I think it was - also a white girl.

It was only on the way out that I was made aware by this white teacher that I had done something that was really pretty nervy. She said, “You know, we are really delighted that you would come. Miss Read is so happy that you are willing to do it.”

I said, “Of course, I'm delighted to come. I know her and I'm glad to see her work. Everybody is so proud of what she's done here.”

She said, “I know, but it's quite a thing for a person who is an official visitor to Atlanta to come out to Atlanta University. I don't know that it's ever been done. We are
