absolutely non-Negroid features - a high brow, a nose that is called a Roman nose, very angular. It was a nose like Senator Nelson Aldrich, Winthrop Aldrich's father, used to have. His daughter, Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., has that same nose. It has a kind of a hook, not at the bottom, but at the top where it comes out from the forehead. DuBois also had a long face with a small black beard. He did not look Negroid at all. His skin was not white, but it was a very light cafe-au-lait. I remember thinking, “This is one of those interesting types that occurs in the U.S.A.” He told me he'd been born in Massachusetts, someplace like North Adams or one of those western Massachusetts towns.
I didn't have much conversation with him, but he was obviously an intelligent man and I noticed him and he was very different from the other people there. Of course, I remembered him because I later heard all these tales about him. I think he's been accused of being a Communist and all kinds of things in recent years. I don't know anything about the truth of the matter, and never have known, but whenever I've heard of him I always remember that he was down there them. He apparently has been there, however, for some years.
Well, that was my day there. Then I went back and went to the Governor's dinner. I remember being just enough on to what the situation was so that I didn't tell the
