or business affairs. It was a habit he had. I saw in a minute that he wasn't letting himself get into any of those things. Trying to relieve the tension which had already begun to appear, I said, “Well, Mr. President, I have had a beautiful vacation in Cooperstown.” It was a little sarcastic remark, and I thought he would laugh. He didn't crack a smile and acted as though he didn't care at all whether I had a vacation in Cooperstown or anywhere. It was a matter of utter unconcern to him. He looked very severe, with his face very straight, a slight scowl between his eyebrows, and he said, “Sit down.”

Then he began. He obviously had squelched my opening sally which was meant to lead the way to conversation. Neither of the others therefore opened any conversation. They saw that wasn't the mood. He didn't look at us, but looked around the room. We were all sitting in front of his desk.

He said, “General Johnson, I have asked you to come today and I have asked Miss Perkins and Mr. Richberg to come today because I think we've been misunderstanding each other. I have asked you, General Johnson, to go on a mission to Europe in which I asked you to make reports to me about the economic recovery in Europe, and other related information. It will throw some light on our
