Board business. He took great offense at Wagner, whom he thought had plotted something to put him on the spoot and to take away from his prestige. It was all a very fantastic imaginary situation, but he built it up in his own mind and I suppose it gave him some consolation.

I may have seen him occasionally, but I only recall one episode when I was lunching with somebody in the Carlton Hotel. I remember that I never went to the Carlton Hotel for lunch, partly because it was General Johnson's hangout. I knew that the people who saw him were people who met him at the Carlton. But on this occasion I think somebody left a telephone message that it was very important that I should meet this person at lunch. I forget who it was. He said he would be out and couldn't get in touch with him, but would I meet him at the Cariton for lunch at one o'clock. Well, there was nothing to do but go.

We sat down at our table. Within a very few minutes General Johnson and Miss Robinson came in and took their places at a table which I later learned was General Johnson's regular table - a small table against the wall. It was only about two tables away from us. I saw them come. Miss Robinson's back was toward me and I don't think she saw immediately. But in a few minutes she did see me. I nodded to her. She nodded to me. We smiled across
