San Francisco. I don't know that that's true, but that's what I assumed. The Crockers would probably be more conservative culturally and socially than the Fleishhackers who aren't anybody in particular socially, but they were very rich and I thought economically they were conservative. So I found that the conservative elements thought well of him, as well as the liberal elements.

Sloss proved to be very good. He was admirable. After this year of disorder and disturbances they settled down and operated the ships. Of course, they raised a lot of grievances. The grievances would be boiled down through the grievance committees. Then they would be referred to the permanent chairman, Judge Sloss, and Judge Sloss would render an opinion. Judge Sloss got almost crazy doing it, as a matter of fact. After a couple of years of it it was wearing him down, because when you got into a position like that, you can't be the least bit emotional. He was. He was desirous of doing the right thing, didn't take it lightly and didn't laugh at it. In every one of these episodes where they had a grievance that couldn't be settled and came to him he worried over doing the right thing and would try to persuade them. The more he persuaded the
