When the leak went out that this information had come to the central office, the barrage of accusation became worse and worse. That was when Dies said, “She's flirting with impeachment.” He had criticism going all the time.
May I say that I never had been so personally disturbed by attacks and accusations as I was by this attack of Dies. It seemed so manifestly unfair and improper. I could hardly believe what I read in the paper he had said. He was a Democrat, after all. I had never been anything but polite to him. He was youngish. He was well educated. I think he had been to one of those Texas colleges or universities. I'm not sure it wasn't Southern Methodist. It was one of the good established colleges. He came from Orange, Texas, if I'm not mistaken. I'd been in Orange. When I'd made a speech in Orange, I had referred to him in my public speech a year or two earlier just as you would refer to the Congressman anywhere you speak, saying, “I have the pleasure of knowing your Congressman,” and so forth. I had never done anything rude to him. I was utterly unable to understand what it was.
My memory is that he had served on some committee in the Congress which was one of the subcommittees on some bill and that I had had occasion to speak with him about
