swallowed, the Bund propaganda that most of these things came out of the Jewish leadership of the USA, that it was the Jews who were doing all these things. That crossed in somewhere with something in Dies' nature - probably that awful longing for a scapegoat which runs through a good many parts of the human race that aren't too philosophical about themselves. The Bund certainly backed him and the Bund gave him a number of opportunities to speak. This meeting in New York where he spoke at the Plaza Hotel was backed by the Bund. That we did discover. I said once to somebody, “Find out who paid for the hall. You can't have a ballroom at the Plaza without paying for it.” Well, it was paid for by people who were attached to, or mixed up in, the Bund.

That was almost the first of his virulent personal attacks on me. He had been making speeches of a very broad nature about immigrants in general, implying things about the Jews. They were the specific part of the immigrants he was going after. Of course, he never said just those words. You don't say them in these days, but that was the implication.

However, when he began his violent attacks on me, I really did take it very hard. I had never had anything like that happen to me before. This I want to tell you.
