had been built up by publicity. He used to say, “They haven't got anything else. They wouldn't need publicity if they had anything else.” He also was, I suppose, lazy. I think there was a criss-cross inside of him too.
Anyhow, he was a very poor press agent for me. He never thought of anything to do, and if anybody else thought of anything to do to build me up, to relieve some of the bad accusations that were made against me by something else, he always said, “No, that would be ridiculous. The only thing to do when something you don't like is printed about you is to ignore it. If you answer it, it keeps it alive for another day. They answer back. That's another day. You can build up a great situation just by going back and forth on it. Just don't pay any attention to it.”
So his advice to me always was never to answer attacks, never to answer accusations, never to correct false statements, just to let it alone. I did follow that to some extent. It fell in with my own temperament. Although I had more flare for publicity than he did, his advice fitted in with my temperamental attitude, which I now recognize as slightly snobbish or snooty - “Don't answer the dirty dogs. Leave them in their place.” It was only after I acquired more wisdom and saw my own evil
