of evidence, or that we had whitewashed things, or covered them up, and also for the protection of the alien himself, as well as the protection of the public interest, that this particular hearing should have public representatives present. Eut I didn't want a mob, and I didn't want it turned into, as it may well have been, a great mob scene and battle. There were indications, and we had had many letters that said, “If this fellow Bridges shows himself out here, he and all your court will be blown to pieces.” That doesn't mean anything, but I gave those letters to Colonel Starling of the Secret Service, whose duty it was to keep public officials from being blown to pieces. There were great threats of rumpuses. Our people in San Francisco reported that there was an awful lot of heat over it. The longshoremen were as mad as they could be. There were some very rough customers among them. If the got rough, if any crackpot, any alien hater, got busy doing something, you'd have a mob of longshoremen that would get out of hand. You couldn't control that. The situation was delicate.

So one day I hit on the idea of having it on Angel Island, which is half an hour by boat from San Francisco. People could go thers with a pass. You get
