the Taft-Hartley Bill which Reilly wouldn't have recommended, and which had just been dreamed up by Taft himself, or Mr. Hartley himself, or by somebody else who was advising them, and probably by a man named Denham who had been one of the lawyers in the National Labor Relations Board who was very much at outs with other lawyers. Under the reorganized Board he became Chief Counsel and was the principal operating force of the new board.

At any rate, this act of Reilly's in cooperating with Senator Ball to suggest amendments to the act served to separate Reilly from the labor movement's good will and affections, where previously he had been extremely well thought of. He had certainly been one of the most useful men in the promotion of sound labor legislation, and just and fair procedures - not only in the Labor Relations Act, but in every other part of the whole New Deal labor relations program. He was one of the best we had ever had. People who were good friends of his, such as Paul Herzog, Jim Rowe and people like that, will shake their heads to this day and say, “Poor Reilly, he quit us.” That is just not true.
