Caroline Slade was a very able woman and I just happen to know her because she was particularly wrought up. She was the Chairman of Women's Committees. He made a million enemies among Republican women. It just put their teeth on edge, and he didn't have to do it.

I remember the President's laughing about it. We both laughed about it. It was needless mistake. That was largely because Willkie was inexperienced and non-professional and didn't have good guidance about things, as to where to lay off and where to put it on thick.

People wanted the President to say that he would keep us out of war. Willkie and the Republicans were saying that all time. I know that that was in the President's mind, and, if I'm not mistaken, he said some things that could easily be interpreted in that fashion, although he always qualified his statements with “unless attacked.” He was very cautious about it. He remembered the reelection of Wilson on the theory that he and kept us out war and that he was too proud to fight. He remembered how terrible everything was afterwards. I think that was probably one of the reasons for his cautiousness..
