Sutherland. Van Devanter was a round, plump man who was a non-entity if anybody ever was. The other members of the court were the Chief Justice, Charles Evans Hughes, Owen J. Roberts, who had been appointed by President Hoover largely as a reward for his excellent work on the “Black Tom” case, Brandeis, Stone and Cardozo. Brandeis had been appointed by Wilson, I think, and had only been confirmed by the Senate after a long and hard fights, which I think was related in an early part of these memoirs, as I took some modest part in the support which was corralled among the general public for his appointment.

Cardozo, who was appointed by Hoover, was a very learned and liberal minded judge of the Court of Appeals of the State of New York. He had been appointed by President Hoover on the recommendation of members of the American Law Institute, a most distinguished law body in this country. He was not a Republican in politics. The appointment had no political significance, but was regarded as an admirable appointment.

Stone, my great friend, was also appointed by Coolidge, I think. He was a man of great ability who had been Attorney General.
