if you're going to rely on them, whether they're bright or whether they're dull: a kind of a solid integrity. He didn't have that. I mean, he hadn't bothered to get his integrity straightened out. He trusted all to his bright head, you know, and that inner integrity which involves the emotions and the convictions, as well as the brains - it wasn't there. I think that was what was the matter. He hadn't put it in order.

After he left, you see he went down to Kentucky saying he was going down there to get ready to run for office. He was going to run for Congress or Senator. He was going to show you how this country ought to be run. He was going to get elected. He was always talking. He went down there, and he got to drinking too much. I man, what with bright talk and bright ideas, and getting a lot of fellows to come along with him on a political movement, and too much bourdon, I guess.

Anyhow, the thing he did in this ballot box stuffing, he obviously did in a kind of a drunken spell. It was a clumsy thing, very silly. I hope he's straightened himself out, because he had real brains. He's very bright.

Q:

I wonder if he's still down there?

Perkins:

He's out of prison now, you know. Sent somewhere.

Q:

Do you remember Don Russell?
