that Roosevelt had sold out for the '44 elections, and I certainly never used the phrase “sold out”. I probably said the '44 elections had something to do with it.

Interviewer:

June 25, 1943: Roosevelt asked Wickard, “Now aren't you glad you're not the war Food Administrator?” Francis Perkins and others said, “Don't answer him.”

Perkins:

Well, this was a joke.

Interviewer:

Roosevelt had a little viciousness in that humor of his sometimes.

Perkins:

Oh yes, sure. Yes, I meant that. That was an act of friendship when I said to Wickard, “Don't answer him.”

Interviewer:

June 29: Wallace issued a public blast at Jones, charging that Jones had obstructed efforts of the Board of Economic Warfare.

Perkins:

Wallace was now Vice President, but still head of of the B.E.W.

Interviewer:

Roosevelt was angry at Wallace, transferred B.E.W. and some of Jones' offices to Office of war Mobilization and placed Byrnes at the head. Do you remember anything of that?

Perkins:

Yes, I remember. Curious, I don't get any click out of
