his own image, I'm sure. I'm sure of that. He would, for conventional purposes, have spoken well of the Creator, but I don't think he ever did any bowing about it.

Was he a religious man in any way?

About that I really don't know. I never saw-- He was religiously in instructed and theologically uninstructed, and I never saw any marked or any exact symptoms of what I would call a religious personality or conviction, but that doesn't mean he didn't have it.

When his wife died, the parson of the local Episcopal Church came to the house, and Mr. Lewis was very courteous to him. His wife had been a member of the Episcopal Church, and that was all right. She was going to be buried in her church. But whether Lewis had any special feelings of a religious nature at that time or not, I don't know. I mean, I was not in a position to know. I just recognized what he did. I went over to the house myself. That's how I know that the parson came in. Lewis was crushed, but--not crushed. I mean, he wasn't going to admit it, you know. He admitted no defeats. He admitted no defeats with anybody or anything, although he was terribly defeated by his daughter.

Terribly defeated by Kathryn. He couldn't cope with her. He didn't know how to cope with her.
