Interviewer:

There's that equation again--Lewis with the Astors, the Delanos, the Stotesburys--

Perkins:

Yes! With Baer, with everybody, with all those who had been financial powers. The President should consult with Lewis. John L. Lewis will now make the policy. He said, “All that Morgan ever had to do--”

I said, “They never saw Morgan come down here to consult with the President.”

“Well,” he said, “all he had to do was call him on the private telephone. You can't tell me that Morgan did not make the policy of this country. He told the Presidents what to do.”

You know, he believed it!

Interviewer:

Well, he's closer to the truth than--

Perkins:

Well, possibly he is, but not very close to it.

At any rate, then I went into an argument with him.

Interviewer:

Did you find out at this time about this contribution?

Perkins:

I didn't know how much it was, and I was determined not to ask him, you see. I'd find that out from Jim.
