We cooked up something, some pending piece of legislation or some speech he was going to make or something of that sort.

He agreed. He was an amiable man. But he was astonished. He had hardly ever seen Lewis, you know, except in groups and so forth, and he was astonished.

Then he said to me that day, “Why, what does he mean by “being the principal supporter'?”

So then I said, “Well, I found out from Jim Parley what he meant,” and I told him the story. He had made a contribution of $50,000.

“That doesn't make him a principal supporter,” said Roosevelt.

“No, but at the end, “I said, “Jim borrowed money from him. Jim says he borrowed it, and that every cent will be repaid.”

Interviewer:

But had not been repaid?

Perkins:

Yes, it had. Some of it had been repaid then.

Interviewer:

And accepted?

Perkins:

And accepted. And it was clearly understood that it was a temporary arrangement, when it was done; and Jim was furious when he thought that Lewis was pretending
