get ahead. You appointed the same old people over again because it was the easiest thing to do. It gave people a lack of confidence, a lack of inspiration. He made the usual arguments against it. He argued that he couldn't see it, and what's more, he'd like to be free. He'd like to be independent, he'd like to get into things on his own. Frankly, he needed some physical repair work done. He'd like to take a couple of months off and have his nose fixed up so he could breathe better. He was always troubled with sinus trouble, you remember. He didn't see it. He was just thinking about it and he couldn't quite see it, but he was interested to know what Mr. Lewis thought.

Then he said, “I don't think it would go so well, either, Lewis. I don't think it would go so well. I don't think a third-term would be popular. I think it would be very unpopular in this country, and I think that to make a bid for a third term would evidently lead to great dissension and be very unpopular.”

Lewis brought his brows together, and he said, “Well, Mr. President, I agree with you there is something in what you say, but I want to make a suggestion. The one way to make the third term popular in this country would be if John L. Lewis stood with you on the ticket as the Vice-Presidential candidate. That would make it popular. That would make it go over.”
