at the Convention, which was the night before it opened and the first day--then he disappeared from Chicago. But I'm pretty sure that he still was cherishing this illusion. I met him in some large gathering in one of the hotels. It was the night before. He was with Phil Murray and I said to him, “Oh, I'm glad to see you. Did you appear before the Platform Committee today?

“Yes. Yes, we appeared before the Platform Committee.”

“And what kind of a reception did you get?”

You know, the usual persiflage. “Oh, very favorable, I think.” So pleasant, so amiable--butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. And Phil Murray right behind him, nodding and saying, “Oh yes, we were very well received. Our ideas were very well received.”

Lewis was smiling. All was well. I saw him the next morning. He was very pleasant. He acted like a man walking around under an illusion.

Interviewer:

If he really believed in this illusion, I should think he would have been terribly disappointed when it didn't come off.

Perkins:

He was. He was.

Interviewer:

And furthermore I should think that if he could get this kind of an illusion, he could get many others.
