He spoke very slightingly. Well, I remember I was surprised, you know--and yet, I wasn't surprised, because by this time I had learned that Lewis was full of prejudices, and pride was the key to them.

Interviewer:

Was he really anti-Semitic, or was this just another thing that he would suddenly grab at and use for a second and then throw away? Did you ever hear any other anti-Semitism out of him?

Perkins:

Oh, yes. I've heard comments. He never had any Jews in his--of course, there aren't many Jews in the mining world, I'll admit.

Interviewer:

No, but there's lots of Jews in the C.I.O. and always were.

Perkins:

Yes, and he treated them with great disdain. Yes, he did. I know he treated them with great disdain. He dealt with them through Sidney Hillman, you see, and he had great disdain for him. When he thought he could handle Hillman, when he thought he could squeeze him, it was all right. But he was very annoyed when the President began relying on Hillman more and more, you see, and shoving him up into the important conspicuous posts.

Yes, I've seen other indications. Well, he wasn't
