I forget just how much time elapsed--not more than thirty-six hours, probably not more than twenty-four,-- before the announcement was made that the Government would seize the mines and run up the flag. Then the President appointed Ickes as Administrator, and the first thing that Ickes did was to send a telegram which could be given to the Press and to the world, to John L. Lewis, asking him--inviting him--to participate in operating the mines, and to suggest to his union that they go back to work for the Government. His second act was to wire the operators, inviting them to participate, you see--that is, to agree to this, or to be quiescent in this, and to come to his office for a conference as to method and manner.

Then Lewis went through the pattern. His Committee was already there, you see. They just had to go into a buddle. So, the next morning's papers carried the great news that the United Mine Workers would proudly accept the invitation of the Government to work for their Government in this great emergency. It was done up in fine language, you remember. They were proud to accept.
