against the middle.” Morgenthau said, “T.V. Soong and his elder associate both bowed and said, ‘Very good, sir, very good; he will be disposed of. He will be disposed of.'

“Just as he said it the second time, I saw Soong make a gesture, like that, and the man go out of the room. I said, ‘Where's he going?' ‘He will be disposed of,' said T.V. Soong, and I had an awful hunch that they were going to execute him right then and there,” Said Morgenthau, “I was frightened. Frankly, I was frightened. I think they were going to. I think that was what they intended to do.

“I then said I wished they'd bring this man in. I'd like to speak with him myself. Well, they agreed to that. But, I'm sure, if it hadn't been for my intervention--because I had to explain to Soong that we wouldn't for anything have anything happen to this man.”

He said, “Well, they eventually said that they understood, and they bowed and they smiled and they scraped, but I don't now know how safe that man is when he leaves Washington. They won't murder him in Washington, I gather, but whether they will or not elsewhere, I don't know. That's the kind of people you're dealing with.”

I remember this, and I thought, “Is Henry going crazy?”-- but as I thought it over, I thought it was not unlikely, you know. It was entirely within the possibilities. They were very
