storm he had within himself, previous to the time we appeared in the first Cabinet meeting after the Convention, he was in full control of himself and perfectly amiable and good-natured and high-minded and so forth, and made no comment upon his own defeat. None whatever.

I remember that plainly, because I thought it was a difficult situation, and he really handled it beautifully.

You had a feeling he was controlling himself?

No. I had the feeling that he had analyzed the whole thing inside of himself and had hashed it out, and had said, “I'll certainly make no fight and I'll make no trouble.”

He's a magnanimous fellow. He wasn't going to make any more trouble for the President or for anyone else. He had a very good attitude, and he spoke about the Convention and he laughed about various things. He spoke about what he had thought was the underlying hope of the Convention, not only for the War but for the Peace, and the number of people be'd talked to that were concerned about the Peace, and all that sort of thing. That was the general theme of his remarks, and I remember thinking, “That's first-rate, Henry. That's a good line to take, and I'm glad you're living above it.”

I mean, I had the feeling he was living above what must have been a very crushing blow, really.
