Then I said to him, “Don't you want to go back to Agriculture?”

“No,” he said, “I'm through with that. I've done my stint there. I've made the contribution I can make there. I don't want to go back there.”

I don't remember whether he said “Wickard's doing a good job,” or not, but at least it was implied in the conversation that he didn't want to go back in there. “But Jones is doing nothing that's of any value to society,” said Henry.

“Oh well,” I said, “That's a little rough. I think he's done some pretty good work. I mean, he's administratively very skillful. He's done pretty well. He's held the bag for a long time.”

Anyhow, as a result of this conversation, he said, “Well, I think I would rather have Commerce than anything else.”

I said, “Would you rather have that than to be the head of some economic and social exploratory team that would go and see what next, or how to make the peace, or what to do for our recent Allies once the Peace is made? What they're going to need? I mean, go and make a survey of the English and the French situation, which is a very important thing and it will probably have to be made.”

He said, “Well, but the results of that will be a long time coming. There won't be anything immediate. I might like to do that three or four years later, or two years later. But
