this was coming right on top of this. Henry had resigned. It was coming right on top of this. I think the request for the resignation had been announced in the evening paper on Friday night, and so everybody was onto it by Saturday noon, you see.

I went to the wedding. There was great consternation in many circles as to what you should do. I went out to the church. I took a cab and went out, and merely thought to myself, “I'll go a little early because I haven't got my own car. I have a cab, and I'll get in, and get away more quickly.”

The ushers were all there, and they were the most anxious looking set of people. Nobody said a thing. I was shown to my seat. It was at St. Albans Church. I wasn't very early, I mean, the church should have been half full by that time-- but it wasn't. Then people began coming in. Well, the church eventually got to be about half full, instead of running over. The only Cabinet officer who showed up was Clinton Anderson. Nobody else showed up at all. Somebody in the State Department showed up, some high officer. I can't remember who it was now. He wasn't the Assistant Secretary, but he was somebody who held a reasonably high post, and had been always a good friend of Wallace's. He showed up. Senator Joe Guffey came in quite early. He sat down beside me. He picked me and sat down beside me, and he said, “This is a pretty state of affairs!”
