knew in Washington who went to the same parish church that I did, Mr. Holster, a nice fellow. He came up and greeted me and said, “So, you're going on this plane?”

I said, “Yes, are you?”

He said, “Yes, I think I'd better get back.”

Still he didn't say why he thought he ought to get back. He said, “I suppose everybody will be rushing back.”

I said, “Oh yes,” sounding as though I knew. I wasn't going to let on that I didn't know, nor was I going to spread any false rumors.

Then I saw Frank Walker and Henry Wallace coming separately. They were not together, but had obviously just arrived in taxicabs. Frank Walker said, “Where were you, Miss Perkins? Where did you hear about this?”

I said, “Hackie got me on the telephone. I was at my club.”

“Well,” he said, “you were lucky. Hackie had an awful time finding me. I had gone to a Sunday School concert where my children were singing. Nobody at my apartment knew just where I could be reached at this concert.”

Wallace said he'd been around New York and had been hard to trace. They hadn't got the word until later than I did. I had gotten it at six and they had gotten it just a few minutes before then, around seven. The question was as to where Henry Morgenthau was. Walker knew that Hackie had been
