A couple of days later, they had arrived, and a telephone call came from the White House, “Will you come to dinner tonight? The President wants you to come for dinner. It's a family dinner. There's nobody there but the family and the P.M. and his family.”

Of course it was not known generally that the P.M. and Mrs. Churchill were here. It wasn't given wide publicity. I went over, and to my horror it was a large dinner. Somebody had just turned up who wanted to see Churchill, and they were there, and I wasn't seated near Churchill. Somebody else ranked the place next to him, and somebody else ranked the place next to the President, and then we went out and looked at the moving pictures. There was no opportunity to take it up.

I whispered to the President, “No good. We haven't had a minute to talk about the I.L.O.”

“Oh, I forgot about the I.L.O.,” he said. He was awfully tired. He said, “I' nearly dead. I have to talk to the P.M. all night, and he gets bright ideas in the middle of the night and comes pattering down the hall to my bedroom in his bare feet.”

He really did, you know. He'd get a big idea and patter right down the hall to the President's bedroom, and wake him up. Tell him his big idea. They were probably good
