it was a question. You had to sort of engage your chauffeur beforehand and tip him a little bit, and kind of jolly him along and give him a present of a pound of sugar to take home, or something--to make sure he'd be there in the evening to take you out to an evening meeting or to dinner for an evening. Well, I couldn't wander way off across town to the Boulevard (Shaushan), you know, without a car.

Senator Thomas, however, arranged somehow with the military for a perfectly magnificent limousine. Beautiful black limousine, all upholstered in beige material--lovely. The kind that Government officials used to ride around in in this town, you know. Very handsome car--very beautiful car, with a liveried shauffeur and all the arrangements. That was what he and Ethel rode over to the Sorbonne in, and rode in wherever they went.

Now, I will say for Senator Thomas, he came faithfully to the first meeting of the I.L.O., and was present in person and sat through the entire first session. He was also present on the day that he made his speech. We had written it for him--Ford Hinrichs and I had written this speech for him--and I had talked with him about the day that he should come and the day that he should speak. We had selected this day at this point on the program as being the best day for the Senator to make a speech, and we wrote him a pretty good speech-- very good, really, we thought it was--and he was present.
